Hannes Riffel is a translator, editor, and publisher. He co-founded the Berlin bookstore Otherland and founded Golkonda Verlag in 2010, where he was director until 2017. From 2015 to 2021, he headed the science fiction/fantasy program area at S. Fischer (FISCHER Tor). For translations of John Clute, Hal Duncan, and Paolo Bacigalupi, he was awarded the Kurd Laßwitz Prize in 2004, 2008, and 2013, respectively. In 2016, together with the team of Golkonda Verlag and Sascha Mamczak, he was awarded a special award of the Kurd Laßwitz Prize for the continuation of the almanac “Das Science Fiction Jahr”, which was published by Heyne Verlag until 2014.
Together with Hardy Kettlitz and Erik Simon, Hannes will answer the question “What does an editor actually do?” on Friday, May 19 from noon to 1 in Atelier 4 (in German). Hannes will also join translator Karen Nölle for her talk about her translation of Ursula LeGuin’s Always Coming Home into German, scheduled for Saturday, May 20, noon to 1, also in Atelier 4.
